Welcome to Restaurant Café Van Puffelen

Restaurant Cafe van Puffelen is located on the Prinsengracht. In the middle of the Jordaan district, in the area around the characteristic ’Negen Straatjes’ (nine little streets): they couldn’t have had a better location. Once just a small and authentic Amsterdam ‘bruin cafe’ (brown bar), but after a couple of expansions Restaurant Cafe van Puffelen has become a hotspot in the city and a place that every ‘Amsterdammer’ knows. Therefore, Van Puffelen is visited by a variety of people: from locals to students and from tourists to families.

Divided over two monumental canal houses, in Van Puffelen you can enjoy a relaxed and tasteful dinner in the restaurant and have a drink in the cosy bar. The restaurant has a stylish but intimate atmosphere and the menu offers a variety of ‘honest’ dishes: fish, meat and vegetarian. The kitchen mainly serves the French/Italian inspired cuisine, but also serves dishes with an oriental touch. The wine list is juist as international and diverse. You can see our menu here. Van Puffelen is also very suitable to welcome large(r) groups. Please visit our group page for more information.

Van Puffelen has a ****-rating on Tripadvisor. Yourlittleblackbook reviewed us as ‘Great gastrobar food. Affordable and seasonal. A perfect spot for a glass of red wine and bitterballs after a shopping spree.’ Read the full restaurant review here.

The cafe is the place where it al started in the eighties: a ‘bruine kroeg’ (brown pub) with a few tables. The bar still breathes this atmosphere of a genuine Amsterdam pub. You can choose from a wide selection of draft beers.

Van Puffelen is the place for an evening with beers and friends, to have lunch on the canal side terrace during a sunny summer day, or ‘borrelen’ (to have drinks) with, of course, typical Dutch bitterballen (dutch meatballs). The bar is also thé best location in the center of Amsterdam to have a birthday party or a graduation party.

Restaurant Cafe van Puffelen is open for dinner and drinks daily and for lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Christmas 2016 at Restaurant Van Puffelen

As the days are getting colder and shorter by now, we start looking forward to one of our favorite holidays: Christmas. Restaurant Van Puffelen will be closed on Christmas Eve and the 25th of December, but on the 26th – an official Dutch holiday called ‘Second Christmas Day’ – we will traditionally serve our special four course Chirstmas Menu (€38,50). This year this will include e.g. a delicious venison steake with a pumpkin tarte tatin, and an apple-caramel cheesecake with Toblerone chocolate mousse. And of course you will enjoy our unique Christmas atmosphere, right on the beautiful Amsterdam Prinsengracht canal. Here you’ll find the complete Christmas Menu in pdf.

The Christmas menu should be reserved in advance.
On December 26 we will also serve our ‘normal’ à la carte menu. Please make your reservation on this page, by phone (0031-(0)20-624 62 70) of e-mail: info@restaurantvanpuffelen.com.

Autumn menu: a menu full of ‘fall favorites’

Leaves are turning red-orange and trees are slowly losing their greens – but at Restaurant van Puffelen this doesn’t sadden us at all. Quite the opposite: as we prefer using seasonal products, we are delighted to put our fall favorite ingredients back on our menu!
Let it storm outside – inside of our restaurant we are enjoying starters such as fresh ravioli filled with game stew, served with rosemary-laurel butter, Jerusalem artichoke chips and cranberry’s. Or our kale salad with roquefort cheese, roasted roseval potatoes, beef strips and caramelized shallots.
For mains, we love the duck breast with celeriac creme, apple-fig chutney and red port-cinnamon sauce. Do you prefer fish, or are you into Asian flavours? Then try our salmon fillet with ‘kroepoek’ crust (prawn cracker crust), a chili-kecap glaze, vegetables and a heartwarming green curry sauce.  Or enjoy a vegetarian option of pumpkin and goat cheese lasagna with sage sauce.
A fall dinner isn’t complete without a proper fall desert – luckily we’ve got that covered too. End your meal in style with a nut-cherry brownie with amaretto ice cream, or the caramel mousse with poached pear and a homemade Dutch ‘kletskop’ cookie.
And this is just a small selection of our menu.. Here you’ll find the complete menu. Hip hip hurray, fall has arrived!

New landing stage for boats right in front of Van Puffelen

Café Restaurant Van Puffelen now has a landing stage for boats only a couple of metres away, right in front of our doorstep. Ideal for boarding on a canal cruise after a delicious lunch. Or for disembarking after a day on the water to enjoy a drink and dinner in our restaurant.

When the sun is shining and you would like to have a little boat party on the Amsterdam canals, Van Puffelen is also the place where you can get some snacks or lunch (sandwiches, burgers, soups etc.) to go with it. Take a look at our snack menu and lunch menu and give us a call at 0031-20 624 62 70. After a few minutes we will bring your order right up to the canal side jetty.

Local and organic products at Van Puffelen

Now available at Restaurant Van Puffelen: beer produced by the Amsterdam brewery Brouwerij ‘t IJ. The Zatte is a ‘triple’, the category reserved for the stronger, blond beers in Belgian tradition. It is a full-bodied, golden beer with a scent of fresh fruit mingled here and there with a hint of grain. The flavour is slightly sweet, ending with a fine, dry aftertaste.

Van Puffelen prefers to work with local and organic products. We serve Hoeksche Rooie potatoes (a sustainably grown, recognized regional potato from the Hoeksche Waard area) and we only work with free range eggs. Our veal comes from calves that are fully organically bred at Eco Fields farm in the Veluwe village of Wekerom, and the beef from the Lindenhoff farm in Baambrugge. Also, we serve bread from Vanmenno and ‘bitterballen’ (a typical Dutch snack) with a three star ‘Better Life’-mark. For more information, please visit our ‘ Partners‘ page.
